Archive for the ‘Domestic Terrorism’ Category

The U.S. Senate has once again decided it’s A-OK to let terrorists buy guns legally in the U.S.  Yes, you read that right.    You can be on the FBI’s Terror watchlist and buy a gun in the U.S.  You can also be batshit crazy and/or have a history of harrassing and attacking women’s health clinics.  Or you can be anybody, like a man with a history of domestic violence, and just show up to a gun show–no background check required!

There have been 351 Mass Shootings in the first 334 days of 2015.  Note that doesn’t include individual shootings–just “mass” shootings.   And all we’re getting from our leaders is “thoughts and prayers”.  I’m not saying don’t pray.  That’s your right to do so.  It probably makes you feel better, but it doesn’t actually DO anything to address the gun violence in this country.  A true Christian demonstrates faith through deeds.  Words are not enough (Christ specifically said it wasn’t enough to simply profess faith but one must engage in good works).

So while everyone is running scared of Muslims right now, please note that white extremists (domestic terrorists, our fellow citizens) have killed twice as many Americans as Jihadists since 9/11.  Twice as many.  But the right will demonize Muslims because “fear of the Other” is such great motivator for voting.  But it’s not the Mooslims you need to fear…it’s the white guy sitting next to you.  And for those of you who want to argue this, you can’t.    FBI stats don’t lie.  It is true for every type of violent crime–rape (twice as likely), assault, robbery, murder (4.6 times as likely), gange violence (53.3%) etc, etc.  If you’re white, the odds of your attacker being white is significantly higher than being attacked by someone of a different color and/or religion.  But white folks don’t see that because our white dominated media focuses so much on crime by other races against whites.  It makes sense that Americans don’t think this is the case.  It’s totally screwed up but that’s the reality.

So America will continue to believe and fear that brown and black people and particularly those with a different religion are the real problem.   The innocent will continue to die and the grand experiment of our democracy will go out with a whimper drowned out by the cacophony of prayers by disingenuous and detached politicians and the rat-a-tat-tat of automatic machine guns.

Four women in TX went to lunch to discuss how they could grow their group membership (ht Bob Cesca). Their group, “Mother’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America” or MDA for short, is kind of new and looking to expand.  They weren’t protesting.  They weren’t making noise. They were having lunch at a public restaurant.

A group of 40 gun owners who believe that there should be no restrictions whatsoever on the right to carry, brought their weapons and sat outside of the restaurant waiting for the women to come out.  The women were frightened, as any normal person would have been particularly in light of all the mass shootings that have been occurring lately. Other patrons were worried and the restaurant owner was too scared to call the cops (thinking that might make things more violent instead of less).

So this is where we are at.  If you disagree with the right, they will follow you to a public place and intimidate you.  Then they’ll claim to be exercising the First and Second Amendments.    It made me pretty angry.  I commented over at Bob’s blog and was immediately insulted by a conservative commenter who says he’s to the right of the NRA (never thought I’d hear anyone actually admit to that).  My response to his attack?

And thanks for that cherry on top of your ad hominem attack. So far you’ve insulted my English reading comprehension skills, my knowledge of American jurisprudence, and now mental stability. You must be The Great Carnac with your ability to gauge someone’s mental and intellectual level over the Internet! I bet you have a tin foil hat in the shape of a turban with a little tea bag hanging jauntily down the front.

I’m seriously considering donating some money to MDA so they can hire a lawyer to sue the shit out of the gun nuts or hire some protection, or maybe both.

You just got to love the sweet smell of victory in the morning!  Congress was FINALLY able to pass a bill to re-open the government AND they did so at funding levels above what it would have been had the House Republicans let the process play out normally.  They also delayed having to deal with the Debt Ceiling.  Basically, the Tea Party Jihadists (let’s just shorten that to Teahadists from now on, mmkay?) cost the country $24 billion and a 1% drop in GDP growth for nothing.

The bad news is that they only delayed the debt ceiling question until some later date so we may have to deal with this kind of brinkmanship again (I’ve read early February 2014 but also read/heard November 2013–either way, the Teahadists will have another opportunity to sink the global economy).

The President made a statement today and here’s my favorite quote:

So let’s work together to make government work better instead of treating it like an enemy or purposely making it work worse. That’s not what the founders of this nation envisioned when they gave us the gift of self-government. You don’t like a particular policy or a particular president? Then argue for your position. Go out there and win an election. Push to change it. But don’t break it. Don’t break what our predecessors spent over two centuries building. That’s not being faithful to what this country’s about.

Can I get a witness!?!?  Actually, our governmental process saved us.  Once again, we owe an unfathomable and unpayable debt to our Founding Fathers.

PS:  Title of post is a quote from Blaise Pascal

Some people have no shame whatsoever.  Sarah Palin, former Alaskan Governor, VP candidate and human being, along with Tea Party darlings and domestic terrorists, Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) protested the closing of Federal War Memorials yesterday by attending a rally at the World War II monument in D.C.  You may recall that Cruz was the guy who kicked off the whole “let’s shut down the government” movement and inaugurated it by babbling on the Senate floor for about 21 hours (whilst butchering Green Eggs and Ham, I might add).  So representatives of the Tea Party whose intransigence is the entire reason behind the shut down and why it continues to drag on without any resolution decided to protest the results of the shut down.  The disconnect (or cynicism or both) is mind boggling.  Here’s one of my favorite derp quotes from the rally.  Palin said:

Our vets have proven that they have not been timid, so we will not be timid in calling out any who would use our military, our vets, as pawns in a political game.

If you think you can read the rest of the tripe without tearing your hair out, click the link.

PS:  I apologize for the link to Politico….their stenography is on full display with this article as there is only a single sentence in it that explains Cruz and the Tea Party’s role in the shut down.  There’s plenty of other tripe….words that could have been used to give more in depth coverage of the situation, but that’s not their bag apparently.  It doesn’t seem to be anyone’s job to do actual journalism anymore.

PSS:  Look who is palling around with terrorists now, Sarah.  But I forgot, their terrorists are freedom fighters….IOKIYAR
