You just got to love the sweet smell of victory in the morning! Congress was FINALLY able to pass a bill to re-open the government AND they did so at funding levels above what it would have been had the House Republicans let the process play out normally. They also delayed having to deal with the Debt Ceiling. Basically, the Tea Party Jihadists (let’s just shorten that to Teahadists from now on, mmkay?) cost the country $24 billion and a 1% drop in GDP growth for nothing.
The bad news is that they only delayed the debt ceiling question until some later date so we may have to deal with this kind of brinkmanship again (I’ve read early February 2014 but also read/heard November 2013–either way, the Teahadists will have another opportunity to sink the global economy).
The President made a statement today and here’s my favorite quote:
So let’s work together to make government work better instead of treating it like an enemy or purposely making it work worse. That’s not what the founders of this nation envisioned when they gave us the gift of self-government. You don’t like a particular policy or a particular president? Then argue for your position. Go out there and win an election. Push to change it. But don’t break it. Don’t break what our predecessors spent over two centuries building. That’s not being faithful to what this country’s about.
Can I get a witness!?!? Actually, our governmental process saved us. Once again, we owe an unfathomable and unpayable debt to our Founding Fathers.
