The Department of Justice has officially accused Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the MCSO for racially profiling in immigration operations and traffic stops as well as discriminating against Spanish speakers in the detention centers.    Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez said, “The problem…is rooted in a culture in the Sheriff’s Office that breeds a culture of disregard for the constitution.”

Yes, FINALLY, someone official and with some teeth have said what community activists, Democratic politicians, advocates for immigrants and lowly folks such as myself have been complaining about for years.  Arpaio’s only two options at this point are to 1) voluntarily cease all discriminatory and illegal behavior or 2) face a lawsuit under The Civil Rights Act.

I’m betting that Joe will get his pink panties in a twist and decide he’d like to fight it out Old West Style in court.  Make our day, Joe…Please be a recalcitrant ass again, just once more.  I sooooo want to see the federal prosecutor take you out to the wood shed.   I want the ugly details of how you’ve been hurting innocent people and denying them their rights to be put into the Judicial minutes for the entire world to see and to preserve it for history.  And then I want the world to see you punished for such behavior.

But the prosecution is a long term consequence.  Sheriff Arpaio actually has some more immediate concerns for now…Dept. of Homeland Security has withdrawn his authority to conduct illegal immigrant screenings at the county detention centers. If he doesn’t desist in doing those screenings, then it will be another violation of law and professional ethics to add to the already sad and long list.

A nice touch to the statement by Asst. Atty. Gen. Perez was the distinction made between Sheriff Joe and the staff of MCSO.  While there certainly were some bad apples in the bunch, they have for the most part been fired or placed on leave.  The rest of the over 16,000 employees are honest people trying to make a living and serve their community with honor.  I hope that I never gave the impression that I thought the entire agency was in the wrong.  If I did then I  apologize.  I sympathize with all the MCSO employees who have had to put up with Sheriff Joe’s abuse and misuse of the office and the agency.  There’s nothing worse than caring about the organization that you work for and having to sit quietly by and watch someone destroy it from the inside.  Been there, done that.

Arpaio’s reaction is set to be streamed live at 4 pm AZ time today.  I’m making popcorn!  🙂

Talking Points Memo has been covering Sheriff Arpayaso for some time—mostly as a sideshow, I admit, but TPM has published several solid articles. From today:

I wonder if this will be enough to cause the rest of our wonderful news media to stop taking this incompetent fool seriously. (Yes, I already know the answer. A man can dream, can’t he?)
