25 years ago today this country faced one of the greatest crisis to democracy in its history1–the Iran-Contra scandal. The country blinked then and so many years later it is completely blind to the danger of losing all we hold so dear. Salon has an excellent summary2 every American should read, but won’t. The money quote:
“If ever the constitutional democracy of the United States is overthrow” [sic], the leading political analyst of the scandal, Theodore Draper wrote at the time, “we now have a better idea of how this is likely to be done.”
Notes:
1. When George Washington talked the Army out of a coup and installing him as King being the first one. The Civil War being the second one. And third, if we’re listing things on a timeline, IMHO is Iran-Contra.
