Arizona Lowering Standards Again

The following is a message from the Arizona Democratic Party:

I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that Arizona has more sunlight hitting the ground per square meter than any other state. In fact, the sun generates nearly double the amount of electricity in Arizona as it does in New Jersey – yet New Jersey installed nearly three times more solar last year than Arizona.

Last year, Arizona spent $150 million on solar rebates. But last year, Arizona spent $3 billion – yes, billion – purchasing fossil fuels from Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.

So Arizona spends 20 times more money on fossil fuels every year than on clean energy.

We can reverse this disparity through the renewable energy standard, which mandates that utility companies generate 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2025. If the standard is weakened, the future of renewable energy in Arizona is jeopardized.

This is why we are concerned that Republicans on the Arizona Corporation Commission are pushing to bend the rules to classify burning trash as clean energy. A Mohave County utility company wants to receive credit toward meeting the renewable energy standard by classifying burning trash as a renewable. On top of that, they want to build the trash burner in Phoenix to offset the requirement for clean energy in Mohave County. The Corporation Commission will decide on this important issue during their open meeting Tuesday, June 20, and Wednesday, June 21. (Read more about the issue here)

The trash burner is so large that Mohave Electric Co-op won’t need any utility-scale clean energy until 2023. That’s 12 years with NO commercial-scale solar! We need your help to make Arizona a world-class leader in solar energy. Tell our Republican commissioners not to weaken our renewable energy standard!
