Only you can prevent forest fires!

Sen. Jon Kyl reported that he lost a vacation home in the wildfires this week.  During testimony before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee he encouraged active forest management and that the Federal Government set aside money for the efforts because,

Prevention will save you a lot of money in the long run, but it does require an upfront commitment

Urging an upfront commitment to forest thinning and other techniques to lessen the impact of wildfires has long been an issue in the Western part of the country but usually a position championed by the Democrats.  Nevertheless, I applaud his stance on the issue.

I am not so happy with his cognitive dissonance on funding for the issue.  For example, Senator Kyle has also taken the position that no tax increases should be levied to pay for such efforts and, in fact, along with most of his GOP colleagues, he continues to vote for tax decreases.  So one has to wonder, how does the Senator and his colleagues expect us to pay for forest fire prevention efforts?    We already don’t have enough to pay our National deficit, much less give more to the National Forest Service.

Ultimately, why should we the people, the teeming masses, sweating our butts off here in the Valley of the Sun, agree to such a thing?  So that wealthy people, like Sen. Kyle, can maintain their vacation homes in and among the glorious forests.

Please do tell us Senator Kyle, where that money will come from….Please?
