Culture Wars in Education

The Superintendent of Schools, recently elected to the office of State Attorney General, Tom Horne, has targeted Tucson Unified School District as the latest front in America’s culture war.  Back in August 2o10 (http://wp.me/pYORZ-1z), I first wrote about Mr. Horne and his support of a state law to ban ethnic studies courses.  He has spent years studying the ethnic studies course on the subject of Mexican Americans.  According to Horne’s study, “the classes provoke racism, encourage students to see themselves as oppressed and foment anti-social behavior.”*  Notice the projection from Horne.  If I had a nickel for every time a conservative politician said or did something racist and then followed that up with “No I didn’t, they did!”, I’d be incredibly rich.

Horne hasn’t even stepped into his new office before threatening Tucson.  He wants them to lose 10% of their state funding, which would amount to $15 million.  However, Horne seems to be forgetting that such a decision will rest with the incoming Superintendent John Huppenthal.    I don’t know where Huppenthal stands but lets hope he is a more reasonable person.
