All Your Uterus Are Belong to Us

Seriously though……St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix has been stripped of its Catholic status by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted as a result of an incident that occurred last November.  Apparently a pregnant woman, suffering from pulmonary hypertension, was given a life saving procedure that ended  the pregnancy.  The decision as to whether it was okay to perform the procedure was made by the hospital’s Ethics Committee, which included a nun, Sister Margaret McBride.  The Committee is obligated to take into account Catholic moral teachings because of the hospital’s status.  The Bishop’s initial response was to excommunicate the Nun.

Here’s the odd thing about the whole affair…..The Committee did consider Catholic doctrine and felt that they would not violate the Church’s standards by allowing the procedure to occur.  According to the Catholic Church, a pregnancy may be terminated if the life of the mother is in jeopardy.  It is known as an “indirect abortion”.

The Bishop followed up the excommunication with a letter of demand to the hospital.  In order to maintain its status as a Catholic hospital, St. Joseph’s would have to 1) agree that the Bishop’s interpretation was right and they were wrong, 2) submit the hospital to a “certification review” and 3) force medical staff to go through perpetual moral training.  Does it sound like the Bishop’s ego was more than a little involved?  It does to me.  Also, I’m sure the medical staff, many of whom are not Catholic would not appreciate the review nor want to sit through the training on “morality” since there is nothing more infuriating than sitting through sessions where you’re told that your morality is wrong and theirs is right.

In a statement just released by the Bishop, he is further accusing the hospital of a list of “horrors” including:

  • distributing contraceptives to patients and advising them on their use, i.e., every Sperm is sacred!
  • voluntarily sterilizing people, i.e., Your Tubes Are Belong to Us
  • providing abortions for the mental or physical well-being of the mother or in cases of rape or incest, i.e., life begins at conception but ends at birth

What this presumably means is that devout Catholics will choose not to go to St. Josephs, mass could not be conducted on campus and the communal wafers would be removed.   Meh….. The hospital can still call itself Catholic and the majority of its funding does NOT come from the Church.  I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

UPDATE:  The hospital has come out with a statement pledging to continue it’s mission of care that was established in 1895.  The Hospital President wrote:

“Morally, ethically, and legally we simply cannot stand by and let someone die whose life we might be able to save.”

Way to go, St. Joseph’s!!!!
