Weakening America

Posted: December 2, 2010 in AZ Assholes, Psychological Projection, Rep. Trent Franks

This one could have just as easily been titled “AZ Asshole:  Rep. Trent Franks”.   Another infamous politician from Arizona actually stated on the House floor that he believes the President is committed to weakening America

The psychological projection of the Republicans never ceases to amaze me.  In this case, Franks is falsely accusing the President of doing something that he and other Republicans are in reality doing themselves.  Sen. Jon Kyl’s opposition to the START Treaty is the perfect example.

Playing politics with U.S. (and arguably worldwide) security, Kyl has held up the vote on a treaty that makes it possible for us to track the location of Russian nuclear weapons and weapons grade uranium.  Marching in lockstep, every one of the 41 Republican Senatorial Caucus members signed a letter pledging to block not only this START Treaty, but also any other action Congress could take unless the President caves on extending the Bush Tax Cuts. They even had the gall to set a deadline for this coming Monday for the cave……errrrr….I mean, compromise.

It’s staggering to me that they’d put our national security at risk.  The are de facto aiding terrorists’ ability to get nuclear fissionable material and weakening our economy by increasing the deficit in order to:

  • provide tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires,
  • prevent progress on the Democratic legislative agenda, and
  • make the President seem weak.

Dumbfoundingly as it is, the strategy will probably work.  I’ve been supportive of Pres. Obama from day 1 and have encouraged bipartisanship for the sake of pragmatism.  I pride myself on pragmatic Progressive thought.  However, caving to the Republican demands on these issues is not only unprincipled but impractical.  It will weaken the President and the U.S. in the long run.  That is giving the Republicans exactly what they want.
