The Southwestern Strategy

Reading today’s opinion column over at CNN by Ruben Navarrette, Jr., former Valley resident and frequent conservative commentator, I was reminded that not all conservatives have lost their minds.  I usually don’t agree with his opinions but this particular opinion was spot on.  He questions the fear campaign that is driving the recent illegal immigration crackdown in Arizona:

“The three big fibs — repeated by top Republican officials — are that the federal government isn’t doing its job to protect the borders, that the law is an attempt to crack down on drug cartels, and that race isn’t part of the discussion. None of that is true. So why repeat it?”

Navarrette even had the bravery to ask local opponents of SB107o how to make sense of the lies.  The only response that is possible or even rational to such irrationality is that don’t bother trying to make sense of it.  Those who lie to create fear to support the cause of cracking down on Illegal Immigration have a political agenda.  It isn’t about the truth, it’s about the ends.  It isn’t about the means to that end, just the end.

We’ve seen this play out time and time again for many decades beginning with rise of Lee Atwater style politics and the Southern Strategy.  This new trend, which turns out is not so new…..this new category of “other” designated by conservatives to add to their fearmongering over Blacks in the American South is the “foreigner”.  And not only are they foreigners with a different skin color, they might have a different religion too.

According to nutcase and Congressional Rep. Louie Gohmert, we’ve been suffering from an invasion of Mexican Muslim babies.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Gohmert claims they’ll use their citizenship to come back in 20 to 30 years and set off bombs.  I think I feel inspired to post a cartoon about this.  There is just too much idiocy to ignore here folks.

Here’s the sad reality……when it comes to Fear v. Reality, fear wins almost every time.  God help us.

PS:  I’ve been lazy with my blog posts lately even though there has been soooooo much to talk about…I’m just worn out, 7 months pregnant and ready to have this baby!
